SPOTLIGHT ON:

Master Course 01
Treating the LGBT Patient
Director: Petros Levounis, M.D.
Faculty: Jack Drescher, M.D., Mary Barber, M.D., and Jennifer C. Pizer, J.D.

This course provides the general psychiatrist with essential tools for LGBT affirmative treatment. The course is organized in four sections which cover basic concerns that affect LGBT populations, including: 1) coming out, heterosexist attitudes, and the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ mentality; 2) legal issues, 3) gay parenting, and 4) sexual identity in patient-therapist relationships. Case studies with different DSM diagnoses will illuminate the impact of LGBT identity and illustrate ways of working with each patient. While ‘Treating the LGBT Patient’ is a useful overview and roadmap for the clinician new to treating LGBT patients, it also will strengthen the knowledge and skills of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and other mental health professionals already working with the LGBT community.
